FAQ
What are the differences between Enduro and Cross-Country (XC) mountain biking?
Enduro focuses on bike handling skills, with races typically consisting of five timed descending segments spread across a mountain. Climbs between segments are untimed, allowing riders to pace themselves, rest, or refuel. Races generally last 2–5 hours, depending on the venue, and emphasize skilled bike handling and choosing optimal lines for speed. Course difficulty is between Cross-Country and Downhill trails.Cross-Country involves racing multiple laps on a single, approximately 3-mile course. XC courses vary in difficulty but prioritize endurance and strong climbing ability, with less focus on technical descents.
---Is Enduro dangerous?
All sports carry inherent risks, but Enduro riders mitigate these with enhanced protective gear, including full-face helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads, compared to the lightweight half-shell helmets typically worn by XC riders. Enduro courses often include "B lines" (easier, slower alternatives) for challenging features. Riders not ready for technical sections are encouraged to walk them, prioritizing safety.
---Do I need a full suspension bike?
While a full-suspension bike isn’t mandatory, a hardtail bike (with front suspension only) requires greater skill, as riders rely more on body positioning for shock absorption. Practicing on a hardtail mountain bike is beneficial, as there is limited tolerance for errors. For Mid-Atlantic Super Series (MASS) races, we recommend a bike with 130-160 mm of front and rear suspension travel.
---Are you focusing on just the young crowd?
No, our events welcome participants of all ages. While we initially started with youths from NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association), we now host riders from age 10 to over 60, fostering an inclusive community for both youth and adult mountain biking enthusiasts.
